The report highlights that 77% of Black professionals aspire to become entrepreneurs or start their own businesses within the next year, marking a clear shift towards entrepreneurship as an appealing career path.
Motivations Behind the Entrepreneurial Shift
The data from LinkedIn’s report suggests that this rise in entrepreneurship among Black professionals is driven by various factors. A significant number of respondents (49%) expressed a desire to focus on something they are passionate about, while 47% cited the need for flexibility and work-life balance. Additionally, 44% of Black professionals believe entrepreneurship will lead to greater fulfilment in their work, and 38% see it as a way to advance their careers.
This movement towards self-employment is not just about passion and flexibility. The report indicates that external factors, such as economic uncertainty, are also playing a role. With 69% of Black professionals stating that news of layoffs has made them consider freelancing, there is a growing perception that self-employment may offer more stability. Moreover, 56% believe they could earn more as freelancers than in traditional full-time roles, and 57% plan to freelance or consult within the next year.
The Rise of Multiple Income Streams
The report also underscores the importance of diversifying income sources among Black professionals. An overwhelming 85% believe that having multiple streams of income is essential. This sentiment aligns with the broader trend of professionals seeking financial security through various means, including side hustles and freelance work.
However, while there is a strong interest in entrepreneurship, the path is not always clear. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of Black professionals reported uncertainty about how to begin their entrepreneurial journey. This highlights the need for accessible resources and support systems to guide new entrepreneurs through the initial stages of building a business.

In response to this growing entrepreneurial trend, LinkedIn has emphasised the tools and resources available to support small business owners, freelancers, and entrepreneurs on its platform. With over 35 million active small businesses on LinkedIn, the platform offers a range of Premium tools designed to assist entrepreneurs at every stage, from getting started to scaling their businesses.
For those looking to build their network, LinkedIn Premium Business provides features like unlimited search to find leads and decision-makers, helping entrepreneurs expand and diversify their networks. The platform’s AI-powered messaging tools further assist in initiating conversations that can lead to valuable business relationships.
LinkedIn also offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their businesses effectively. Premium Company Pages act as an in-house marketing department, allowing business owners to highlight awards, certifications, and press mentions, along with custom client testimonials and reviews.
