New research from American Express and The Conduit reveals that more than two-thirds of Gen Z employees working in the UK aspire to own or lead a business in the future. The survey, focused on workers aged 18 to 27, highlights a strong entrepreneurial mindset across this generation, with many already feeling confident in their soft skills.

According to the findings, 87% of respondents said they are confident in their collaboration skills. A further 82% believe they possess innovative thinking, and 80% feel capable in leadership. However, the data also shows areas where Gen Z professionals feel less prepared for entrepreneurship.

Only 62% felt confident in developing a business plan and just 54% were confident in pitching for funding. A third (34%) cited a lack of knowledge about sources of business funding as a barrier to launching a venture. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter (23%) felt they lacked the right professional connections to start a business.

The study suggests that while Gen Z professionals are equipped with core interpersonal skills, they face knowledge and resource gaps that could delay or deter their entrepreneurial plans.

Intrapreneurship May Bridge the Gap Between Aspiration and Opportunity

The report also explores how employers could do more to support entrepreneurial ambition within existing organisations. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of Gen Z respondents said they would be more motivated if their job allowed for greater entrepreneurial freedom. A similar number (62%) feel they are not able to fulfil their potential in their current roles.

The findings point to a growing opportunity for businesses to promote intrapreneurship – where employees act with entrepreneurial initiative inside a company – as a means to retain and motivate younger staff. Encouraging these behaviours could not only help employees develop the practical skills needed to launch ventures in the future, but also deliver innovation and growth for the business itself.

Lee Sullivan, Vice President at American Express, commented, “It’s clear from our research that the Gen Z workforce has an entrepreneurial mindset and many believe they have the skills needed to set up on their own. But it also reveals a clear opportunity for the wider business community to support those with leadership ambitions, either within their existing organisation or in building their own business. Wherever their path takes them, American Express is focused on backing entrepreneurs and their businesses to succeed.”

Paul Van Zyl, Co-Founder and CEO of The Conduit, added, “Gen Z are not just the future of business – they are the changemakers of today. Their ambition, creativity and drive to lead are undeniable, but realising their full potential requires access to the right networks, mentorship and opportunities. At The Conduit, we believe in the power of community to nurture bold ideas, champion emerging leaders and create the conditions for impactful entrepreneurship to thrive.”
