A recent survey has revealed that 44.5% of the workforce plans to seek AI-related upskilling through their employer within the next five years.

However, Robert Half, a specialist recruitment firm, warns that relying solely on technical skills could limit access to critical Gen AI talent.

As AI grows in importance, there is an increasing demand for specialised roles such as AI ethicists, implementation specialists, and prompt engineers. Despite this, Robert Half emphasises that not all AI-related positions require deep technical expertise. The firm highlights the importance of soft skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and learning abilities in deploying and using AI effectively in the workplace.

Addressing Stereotypes in Talent Acquisition

Madeleine Barnes, Senior Talent Solutions Manager – Interim Services at Robert Half, points out that stereotypes are hindering the attraction of Gen AI talent. “Gen AI talent are the new in-demand workers across various sectors,” Barnes said. “We’re seeing new roles emerge to support the growth of Artificial Intelligence, but as these positions are so new, the skills available to fill them are extremely scarce. Growing and developing skills across the entire workforce is going to be critical in an AI-enabled world.”

Barnes also notes that many individuals who consider themselves part of the Gen AI talent pool have a passion for or interest in using AI tools rather than technical skills to develop them. She suggests that firms should assess their current talent pool to identify areas where AI can add value and where there is potential to nurture skills. “When we also consider that Artificial Intelligence is becoming an enabler for people of all roles and at all levels, firms shouldn’t limit themselves to core tech expertise when building AI-enhanced workforces,” Barnes added.

As AI continues to integrate into various sectors, the focus on upskilling and developing a diverse range of AI-related skills will be crucial. Employers must adapt their recruitment strategies to include a broader spectrum of skills beyond technical abilities. This approach will not only enhance the deployment of AI technologies but also ensure sustainable talent development in an AI-driven world.
