The global cybersecurity industry is facing a significant skills shortage, with nearly 4 million positions unfilled worldwide.

A recent study reveals that 71% of organisations are currently struggling to recruit skilled professionals in this critical field. This growing gap presents a substantial opportunity for those exploring career options or deciding on university courses.

However, cybersecurity is not the only sector experiencing staffing challenges. According to Guy Thortnon, founder of Practice Aptitude Tests, several other industries are also grappling with similar shortages. He noted that, as of October last year, about 9.7% of businesses in the UK were reporting labour shortages, creating both challenges and opportunities within the job market.

“While employers are facing immediate staffing challenges, these gaps open doors for jobseekers and students planning their future careers,” Thortnon explained. “By capitalising on these shortages, individuals can increase their chances of securing employment in a competitive environment.”

Construction Sector Faces Skilled Labour Deficit

The construction industry, along with trades like plumbing and electrical work, is encountering a significant labour shortage, driven by skill gaps and an ageing workforce. Thortnon highlighted the benefits of pursuing a career in construction, especially for those seeking well-paying jobs without the financial burden of student loans.

“Manual labour remains in demand, providing a stable career path even as other sectors are impacted by automation and AI,” he said. Apprenticeships offer a practical entry point, combining industry-specific training with academic learning. These programmes are particularly beneficial for those who have recently completed their GCSEs.

Banking Industry Offers Financial Stability Amidst Recruitment Challenges

In the financial services sector, there has been a decline in applications for both permanent and temporary positions as of May 2024. Despite this, the banking industry remains a lucrative career choice, with the average salary in the UK exceeding £42,000, significantly higher than the national average.

“A degree or apprenticeship in finance, accounting, economics, or business administration provides a strong foundation for a successful career in banking,” Thortnon advised. The financial stability and career prospects in this sector make it an appealing option for those with an interest in maths and accounting.

Hospitality and Tourism Sectors Seek New Talent

The hospitality and tourism industries, which are crucial to the UK economy and rank as the third-largest employers in the country, are also facing a high demand for new workers. This sector offers excellent opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and networking, particularly during college and university years.

Thortnon emphasised the benefits of gaining experience in hospitality and tourism, noting that these roles can provide valuable skills and connections that are beneficial in any career.

IT and Technology Industries Demand Skilled Professionals

Beyond cybersecurity, other areas within the IT and technology sectors, such as software development and data analytics, are experiencing similar staffing shortages. The rapid evolution of the IT industry has resulted in a high demand for professionals to keep pace with these changes.

“There are numerous pathways into IT, including degrees, degree apprenticeships, and traditional apprenticeships, all of which can lead to a prosperous career,” Thortnon said. The demand for skilled IT professionals is expected to continue growing, making it a promising field for jobseekers.

Health and Social Care Sector Urgently Needs Workers

The health and social care sectors are also in urgent need of new workers, particularly as the demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise. Hospitals, care homes, and social care services are all experiencing significant staffing shortages.

Thortnon pointed out that careers in health and social care offer not only job security and growth but also the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
