Since its launch in 2020, Code Ninjas Langley has established itself as a hub for young tech enthusiasts, providing a fun and supportive environment for children to learn coding.

Over the past four years, 650 students have passed through the doors of this unique “dojo,” where aspiring coders are encouraged to develop skills that will benefit them in the future. Studio Director Sital Nakarja reflects on the journey and the impact Code Ninjas has had on its students.

“When we first launched, we didn’t just want to be another kids’ activity provider,” said Sital. “As parents ourselves, we saw how important technology became during the pandemic. Kids were spending more time on screens, and we wanted to turn that passive consumption into an active, positive experience. Our goal has always been to help kids become creators, not just consumers, while developing future-proof skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.”

At Code Ninjas, coding is presented as a creative and engaging activity. Sital explains that many people perceive coding as dull, but it can be incredibly imaginative, especially when it involves designing video games, characters, and stories. “It’s amazing to see what kids come up with. Unlike playing video games, where they’re just users, coding allows them to build something from scratch and feel a sense of achievement,” he added.

Building Skills for the Future

Code Ninjas offers a unique learning environment where coding is cool, and gaming is celebrated. Students, known affectionately as “ninjas,” learn to code through projects that challenge and engage them. Instructors, referred to as “Senseis,” play a key role in guiding students through these projects, helping them develop not only technical skills but also social connections and confidence.

The programme also fosters growth among its instructors. Several Senseis started as students themselves and have progressed to mentoring new ninjas. Sital proudly shared that four former students have become Senseis, including one who is just 14 and already volunteering at the dojo.

“It’s amazing to see how the confidence they built as ninjas has transformed them into Senseis,” said Sital. “After the pandemic, many children struggled socially, but our Senseis have been crucial in helping them build connections, support each other, and grow. They aren’t just teaching coding—they’re mentoring and encouraging our students to develop their ambitions.”

One long-time student praised the support they received, noting how their Senseis helped them reach a significant milestone: “I’ve been a ninja at Code Ninjas Langley for over three years, and thanks to the support of my Senseis, I’ve reached my Red Belt. I still enjoy every session as much as I did on day one.”

A Bright Future for Code Ninjas Langley

Looking ahead, Code Ninjas Langley aims to continue offering a safe and supportive space for children to explore coding, build friendships, and grow in confidence. The team remains committed to creating an inclusive environment, particularly for children who may not find traditional activities like sports or music a good fit.

Sital emphasised the importance of this unique approach, saying, “Our curriculum is self-taught and self-paced, which allows students to really thrive. Code Ninjas has always been a place for kids who don’t quite fit into more traditional activities. Parents often struggle to find something that suits their child’s needs, and we’re proud to provide a space where communication challenges can be worked through while learning to code.”

As Code Ninjas Langley celebrates its fourth anniversary, the dojo looks forward to continued growth, both in its students and its Senseis, with a shared focus on fostering creativity, confidence, and essential coding skills.
